Point of Reference
During the Georgia General Assembly in January 2012, the Georgia Department of Economic Development issued mock checks to each State Representative and State Senator signed by the “Tourist” of their respective districts. The dollar amount that the Tourism Industry generated during the last fiscal year was indicated on each check. The dollar amount of the checks prompted the Research Team of Raccoon Hogg Community Development Corporation to collect data on Cultural Heritage Tourism Development. The research put on display that the Historical Economic Spine for tourism has been within what is now known as the Gullah/Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor, of which Sapelo Island, Georgia is a part of and some would even say the future cornerstone.
Our research has concluded that Developing Cultural Heritage Entrepreneurs is the foundation for sustaining Cultural Heritage Tourism and its impact on long-term economic development strategies. Moreover, Developing Cultural Heritage Entrepreneurs is the archetype strategy for dismantling more than two centuries of systemic deprivation of the Gullah/Geechee Southeastern Coastal Culture of the United States of America.
